I've only read the first story so I have a limited selection to make a choice from. I have been reading "Rubicon" a history of the end of the Roman republic and a selection of essays on politics and poetics by Adrienne Rich instead of the Erdrich. (Also I put down the Red Convertible somewhere around the house and I am not sure where it is, not that I have looked very hard). I think I read multiple books at a time more because I just pick up whatever book is handy, rather than get off my ass and go get the one I had been reading. Good thing I am surrounded by books.
Carol read the first four stories and said they are right out of Love Medicine. Evidently she wrote the stories, then pulled them together in a novel...or something like that.
If it is based on a true story give it more validity? This is not a smart-ass comment. It just made me think of this line: "Don't let truth get in the way of a good story."
I still thought it was a phenomenal story, regardless of its validity or reliability. The inspiration to come up with that innovative story-telling was very mystifying.
Don't worry about it being a smart-ass comment - you're still a smart-ass.
After only four stories, "Red Convertible." Perhaps, "Saint Marie" -- totally f'd up.

Are we talking about a donkey or a rear end? And we talking about smart as in a sharp pain or erudite? Hermeneutical context is everything.
